The farms aim is to save sea turtles from extinction since the population of these inhabitants of the sea has dwindled drastically in recent years.
To increase the number of surviving hatchling, the eggs of the turtles are collected and buried on a sandy terrain of the farm. The newly hatched turtles are released in the sea after three days of hatching. If you are there at the right time, usually at dusk, you can watch the little turtles make their way into the sea and into freedom - with the hope that many survive and hacht little ones again.
Mangrove Boat Tour
with a visit to the cinnamon island
In Balapitiya we rent a boat and start our trip on the Madu River. Madu River is a freshwater lake with about 62 islands and some of it can be visited. One of it is the cinnamon island where we attend a guided tour explaining the cinamon production and another one is the temple island which we also ging to see. During the ride you will see the several bridges which cross the river. Then we drive through the mangrove forests on the boat and with a little luck you might even see a crocodile.

Brief Garden by Bevis Bawa
Brief garden was starting 1929 gradually converted from a former rubber plantation into an English landscape garden by the owner Bevis Bawa - the brother of Sri Lanka's most famous architect "Geoffrey Bawa".
The tour through the garden leads through jungle-like areas past fascinating stone sculptures and extraordinary squares, sometimes revealing the view through artificial visual lines.
